Royal Malta Yacht Club sailors, Antonia, Victoria, and Richard Schultheis continued to produce remarkable results at the European Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal. After six days in mostly very light winds the 49er/49erFX European Championships closed with two podium places for Maltese and Royal Malta Yacht Club sailors.
Antonia and Victoria Schultheis finished the qualifying series in the 49erFX after three days and went into the final series in second place in silver fleet. Unfortunately, due to a lack of wind only three more races could be sailed in the last three days, with the siblings securing first place in the Silver Fleet.
In the 49er Class Richard Schultheis and Youenn Bertin secured their place within the top 25 teams in Gold fleet in the first seven races; an outstanding performance achieved amongst 90 high level teams. Five more races were sailed in the final series, where they managed an excellent 17th place overall. After the silver medal at the Junior Worlds a few weeks ago they managed to repeat this result at the Junior Europeans, which was part of the 49er European Championships.
The 49er/49erFX European Championships were the last big international regatta for this year and will be followed by the 49er/49erFX World Championships in Lanzarote, ESP in March 2024. With their eyes set on the XXXIII Olympic Summer Games, in Paris, the last opportunity for Antonia and Victoria to qualify for the 2023 Olympiad will be the Hyeres Regatta, FRA next April.
