A new addition to the Maltese fleet is Mistral Racing MT, a project born from the passion of four Maltese sailors eager to return to their racing roots. Co-skippered by Matthew Scicluna—whose résumé includes campaigns on the family boat Maltese Falcon, multiple double-handed Rolex Middle Sea Races, and medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe—and Zach Cassar Torreggiani, the team unites a crew of seven, six Maltese and one Italian, with decades of collective experience. Cassar Torreggiani adds further offshore pedigree, and together the crew brings an impressive record of more than 40 editions of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, alongside Rolex Fastnets, transatlantic crossings, Giraglias, RORC Caribbean 600s, and other prestigious regattas.
While many of Mistral’s sailors have been away from the RMSR in recent years, they return in 2025 with renewed drive, strengthened by long-standing personal connections and the shared ambition of excelling together. Their preparations have included the delivery trip from Naples, giving them valuable time to familiarise themselves with the boat, as well as competitive racing at home, where team members Fabio Galea, Matthew Scicluna, and Lee Gauci claimed victory in the opening race of the SB20 National League.
“Coming back to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, my goal was to rebuild a team bound by strong personal connections, both on and off the water, all sharing the same dream of success. None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors and partners, whose belief in our vision has given us the opportunity to bring this project to life. We are proud to carry their names with us on this journey and determined to make them proud on the racecourse,” noted Matthew Scicluna.
