After taking a break from double-handed racing in 2023 and competing with a full crew in 2022, Andrew Agius Delicata and Matthew Gabriele, co-owners of the Reflex 38 Vivace, felt the pull back to the unique challenge that this format presents. Racing with a full crew was an exciting experience, especially since their team of close-knit friends worked seamlessly together. However, double-handed racing offers a different level of intensity and focus, which they both thrive on. As co-owners of the boat, their deep familiarity with its handling gave them confidence in their ability to perform well. They’ve had strong podium finishes in previous double-handed events at the Rolex Middle Sea Race, and this year, they are determined to aim high once again.
Their experience in the fully crewed race in 2022 has influenced their approach to this year’s double-handed race. During the fully crewed competition, they experimented with various techniques, learning how to optimise the boat’s speed and manoeuvrability. Although the full crew won’t be racing with them this time, they have been actively involved in preparations, and their insights remain invaluable. With the competitive edge in the double-handed class growing, particularly with professional sailors now joining, Andrew and Matthew are ready to push themselves to achieve another podium finish, perhaps even outperforming fully crewed boats once more.
