Triple Crown for Elusive 2 at Medcomms Round Malta Race

Lightning claims honours in IRC 2

The Podesta siblings’ Elusive 2 made it three in a row, when they won the annual Medcomms Round Malta Race for the third year running.

A nineteen-strong fleet, split between three Classes, was up early on Republic Day holiday. With a forecast of bright sunshine and light to moderate westerly winds, Race Officer Peter Dimech sent the fleet on the south about course.

Weather conditions made for a somewhat tricky start. With westerly winds the start line was very sheltered on the Valletta side, so all boats in the first start opted for the Tigne side. Godwin Zammit’s Inspiration got off to a good start being first boat out and in a puff of wind. This was not held for long however as the larger boats soon crept in upwind and shadowed her.

While some boats took complex gambles by hitting the extreme sides of the line, Elusive 2 took a more conservative approach by starting in the centre of the line and eventually heading towards the available patches of wind.  This is enabled them to complete the first leg of the race to Munxar cardinal mark in a strong enough position to be able to gradually overtake the leading boats and continue to extend their lead further along the race over the fleet.

Werewolf, skippered by John Horn had by now taken a commanding lead, with Elusive II, Sean Borg’s Xpresso, the Gatt Floridia’s Otra Vez and Unica in hot pursuit. These positions, were in the main part held right up to the finish back in Marsamxett.

Werewolf, claimed line honours, however it was Elusive 2 who went on to win the race by eight minutes on corrected time from the next placed Otra Vez, making it a triple crown for the Podesta siblings.   Unica claimed third place.

IRC Class 2 was also a hotly contested affair, first to cross this line in this Class was Mark Vassallo’s Fast Forward, however it was Alfred Manduca’s Lightning to pip Vassallo to first place on corrected time by a mere seventeen seconds. Anton Calleja’s Lartista came in third place.
