Tough conditions for Yachting Malta EurILCA Series

Despite the unusually warm and sunny weather for January, the weather gods have not favoured the Club’s attempt to host a full programme of events for the Yachting Malta EurILCA Masters Event in Ta’Xbiex. With races being postponed on Friday due to the lack of wind, there was optimism amongst the eleven nations taking part in the event early this morning as they were greeted with 8 knots of wind enabling the Race Management team to set a course just off the Sliema Seafront.

These conditions enabled the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets to fit in two races, however, hopes for a further to races were dashed when the wind dropped to 5knots resulting in the fleet having to return back to its base at the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

The ILCA 6 fleet saw Rob Cage (GBR) and Vadim Yahkhinson (MDA)  win a race each, with Cage leading the standings for the day with 3 points.  The larger, ILCA 7 fleet saw Christoph Marsano (AUT) and Aristos Chatzistamatiou (GRE) take two wins, however it was Wolfgang Gerz (GER) who matched Marsano’s points tally, both finishing the day with five points each.

Racing resumes tomorrow, Sunday 8th January at 1030hrs, with four races planned weather permitting.
