Valuable Lessons from Kiel Week: RMYC Youth Team at the ILCA 6 Men’s World Championship

Kiel Week has wrapped up for our RMYC youth team, who took part in the ILCA 6 Men’s World Championship from 21st to 25th June in Kiel, Germany. It was also a pleasure to reconnect with fellow sailors from Malta Young Sailors Club  during the event.

Held from 21st to 25th June in Kiel, Germany, the Championships were challenging in that conditions consisted of fluky light winds during the qualification series, followed by rainy days and windy races in the finals. Unfortunately, these conditions aren’t easiest sailing for our Mediterranean-trained sailors, and they struggled with the conditions.

Tomek Vaccaro finished 32nd overall (Gold Fleet), whilst Poyraz Fidaboy finished 97th and Afonso Southino finished 98th.

Nonetheless, our sailors gained valuable international experience and now are looking forward to new challenges for the remainder of the year, including moving up Classes and training at the RMYC Sailing School for the next regatta season in Malta.

The sailors were accompanied by Matthew Flores, who served as assistant coach and benefited from observing the close competition firsthand. He is now preparing for his next challenge at the U21 World Championships at the end of August.

A big thank you to BeActive – SportMalta for their continued support of the Malta team’s participation in this event. Special thanks goes to the Malta Sailing Federation and heartfelt gratitude goes to the Royal Malta Yacht Club for supporting the youth programme.
