The Royal Malta Yacht Club, in collaboration with Transport Malta, recently hosted a well-attended seminar focused on “VHF – Best Practices”.
Delivered by Björn Cassar Simmonds, VTS Senior Manager within Transport Malta, the session aimed to enhance the knowledge and proficiency of mariners in the use of VHF radiotelephony—an essential tool for safe and effective maritime communication.
The seminar highlighated the correct use of standard marine communication phrases, the importance of clarity and concise language, and the roles of local VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) centres. Participants gained insights into the correct application of message prefixes such as Mayday, Pan-Pan, and Securité, as well as the significance of timely weather bulletins and navigational warnings broadcast across key VHF channels.
Following the session, attendees enjoyed drinks and informal networking, with a strong turnout of Club members taking the opportunity to discuss best practices and build connections within the sailing community.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club Commodore Mark Napier thanked Transport Malta and all attendees for their presence and contribution towards learning and creating a safer marine environment.
