RMYC Youth Team demonstrates progress and growth on international stage.

Once again the RMYC Youth Team demonstrated progress and growth at international level as Matthew Flores, Lara Merten and Karlis Junaers competed in the EurILCA U21 European Championship.

Held between the 17th and 23rd March 2024 in Pollensa , Spain competition wrapped up after six intense days of competition, marked by tricky light winds. Despite the tough conditions, the RMYC Youth sailing team gave a very good account of themselves sailing in a light breeze in a race venue surrounded with mountains, but their determination shone through.

Matthew Flores achieved a personal best, securing a spot in the Gold fleet and finishing 44th out of 137 participants. Lara Merten also put in a solid performance, ranking 48th out of 65 women. The progress of the RMYC youth team is a point of pride, with Coach Karlis Junaers also making waves by reaching the Gold fleet. Despite juggling coaching duties at RMYC and training at his free time, Karlis showcased significant improvement from last year’s competition.

Matthew and Karlis are now heading home to prepare for their next commitment which is The Last Chance Regatta which will be held in conjunction with the 2024 Semaine Olympique Française in Hyeres, France from 18 – 27 April 2024. This Regatta is the last opportunity for possible qualification for Paris 2024. Furthermore they will be also preparing for the last two ranking events hosted in Malta. Meanwhile Lara Merten will be travelling directly to Shanghai, where she will compete in the inaugural Shanghai Open Cup as invited athlete.

Matthew Flores’ and Lara Merten’s participation was partly financed by SportMalta.
