Jarhead lead provisional rankings.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club hosted the second race of the 2021 Spring Coastal Series on Sunday morning. The sizeable fleet provided action and colour to Marsamxett Harbour as they set off on the approximately 20 nautical mile course which took them southbound in the direction of Bengħajsa. Near perfect weather conditions with a low swell and winds varying between Force 3 and Force 4 from the south east.
Thundering out of the harbour mouth was Ramon Sant Hill’s Comanche Raider III, who took the lead from the word go. Close behind him was Godwin Zammit’s Inspiration, Mario Sant’s Time Out and Jarhead Young Sailors’ Foundation Jarhead. Comanche Raider III kept the lead to finish first, followed by Jarhead and Peter Ellul Vincenti’s Manana. With ratings coming into play it was Jarhead, skippered by Emilie Gregory who took the honours for the day.
“The race was great fun and we had amazing conditions. Having so many boats on the start line was fantastic. We had a mixed abilities team with two beginners and six experienced sailors. We worked hard to keep on Comanche Raider’s bow. We maintained our distance from them on the upwind which is amazing considering the size difference. The whole team worked really hard constantly trimming the sails and adjusting for the wind shifts. It was a super day at sea and looking forward to the forthcoming races” enthused Emilie Gregory, Skipper Jarhead.
Completing the final rankings and joining Jarhead in the roll of honour were two J92s. Second place went to Jlance, skippered by Kristian Borg Nicolas, whilst third place went to Charles Cronin’s Alecto.
Race Officer Peter Dimech expressed his satisfaction at the level of participation. He thanked volunteers Simon Dimech and Edgar Warrington for providing support on the day.
Race Results are deemed provisional until the end of the Series. Points for the Coastal Race Challenge Trophy will be awarded to each boat according to its overall position in each race which will vary with the number of starters. The next race will be a short course and is scheduled to take place on Sunday 7th March at 1100hrs.
