Inaugural Cannes to Malta Race Sets Sail Ahead of the Rolex Middle Sea Race

A new offshore sailing challenge takes to the Mediterranean today as the inaugural Cannes to Malta Race officially gets underway. Co-hosted by the Yacht Club de Cannes and the Royal Malta Yacht Club, this first-ever edition aims to establish a reference time for what is expected to become a regular fixture on the international offshore racing calendar.

The race covers approximately 600 nautical miles, charting a route from Cannes to Valletta, passing close to the spectacular islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily before finishing off Malta’s historic Grand Harbour — just in time for the start of the 46th Rolex Middle Sea Race later this month.

Royal Malta Yacht Club Commodore Mark Napier welcomed the collaboration between the two clubs, describing the race as an exciting development for offshore sailing in the region.

“We are delighted to see the first-ever Cannes to Malta Race set sail today. This partnership with the Yacht Club de Cannes builds on a shared commitment to grow offshore racing in the Mediterranean. Our hope is that, in future years, this race will serve as a feeder event for the Rolex Middle Sea Race, offering international crews the opportunity to experience two great offshore challenges in succession.”

The Cannes to Malta Race was conceived as both a test of endurance and a symbolic bridge between two of the Mediterranean’s most active sailing communities. By establishing a benchmark time on this new course, organisers intend to build a foundation for future editions that will welcome a broader fleet and class divisions.

“The finish line in Valletta will not only mark the end of a pioneering voyage but also the beginning of a new offshore racing tradition linking the north and south of the Mediterranean.” Concluded Commodore Napier.

The Cannes to Malta Race is sponsored by 20Twenty,  with principal support from Visit Malta and additional backing from Yachting Malta and Camilleri Marine.
