We are pleased, on behalf of the Association of International Women In Malta, to invite you to their May Lecture: Holy Infirmary of the Knights. Not just a hospital for physical treatment, the La Sacra Infermeria (Holy Infirmary) in Valletta was run by the Order of St. John to heal patients holistically. The lecturer, Historian Emanuel Buttigieg, PhD Associate Professor in Early Modern History at the University of Malta will highlight the daily life within the La Sacra Infermeria, a cultural and religious space. Running a hospital was the essence of the Order of St John – it was the hospital dimension that allowed the Order to survive after Malta in 1798, into the present modern world. The expense incurred in the running of the Holy Infirmary was fully justified by the ‘return’ it generated for the Order in that it sustained the good name of the organisation. For a patient at the Holy Infirmary, it was a holistic experience. From the moment a patient stepped in he was dressed as a patient, placed in a clean bed, fed, read to, heard mass, admired works of art, and so on. This was a place where both body and soul were to be healed. More than just a hospital where the sick were treated, the Holy Infirmary was a cultural and religious space that played a key role in the social life of the Order and of Malta. |
