Join us for an enthralling talk by long-standing RMYC member John de Giorgio, who recently participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), sailing from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands to Saint Lucia in the Caribbean.
During this remarkable journey, John and his crew faced the unexpected when they answered a Mayday call from a distressed catamaran in the middle of the Atlantic. Rising to the challenge, they successfully rescued the five Swedish crew members and took them aboard. With double their original crew, John and his team sailed the remaining 1,800 miles to their destination, overcoming unique logistical and emotional challenges.
In his talk, John will share his journey of preparation for the voyage, offering invaluable tips and techniques for aspiring ocean-crossers and provide an in-depth recount of the rescue mission, reflecting on the lessons learned in answering a Mayday call.
For those who have meticulously planned for abandoning a vessel but never considered the logistics of rescuing others at sea, John’s insights will be eye-opening and thought-provoking.
Participation is free but if interested kindly advise us of your intentions by sending an email to rmyc@rmyc.org by not later than Monday 27th January.
