The Royal Malta Yacht Club’s Film Nights have quickly established themselves as a valued addition to the Club’s social calendar, drawing a growing audience of members who look forward to more than simply an evening of entertainment.
The Film Nights offer a platform for shared reflection and discussion. Each screening—centred around sailing and maritime themes—is followed by an open exchange of views, where experiences, lessons, and perspectives are brought to the fore. While some films provide moments of light-hearted relief, others prompt deeper conversations on seamanship, resilience, and decision-making at sea.
The most recent screening featured All Is Lost, directed by J. C. Chandor and starring Robert Redford. The film’s stark portrayal of a lone sailor facing adversity at sea set the tone for a particularly engaging and insightful discussion among attendees.

Drawing on both the film and real-life experience, members present reflected on key principles of offshore safety and seamanship:
- Act immediately in the face of danger — flooding must be addressed without delay
- Stay with the vessel — going overboard when alone is rarely survivable
- Always clip in — harnesses and jacklines are essential safeguards
- Treat the cockpit as the primary safe zone
- Send distress signals early — prioritising safety over hesitation
- Address problems by order of risk — what threatens life or vessel first
- Stabilise the boat before taking action
- Reduce sail early and avoid unnecessary complexity
- Build redundancy into all critical systems
- Avoid unnecessary risks — survival demands discipline, not heroics
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of anticipation and preparation. As highlighted during the session, effective sailing is as much about preventing errors as it is about managing them: “Sailing is not just about skill; it is about eliminating mistakes before they happen.”
Rear Commodore (House) Mario Debono expressed his gratitude towards those contributing to making the Film Nights more interesting especially those experienced sailors in attendance, whose insights and willingness to share knowledge added significant depth to the evening.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club will host two further Film Nights, with the next scheduled for Tuesday 14th April. The featured film is Captain Ron, loosely inspired by screenwriter John Dwyer’s real-life experience. Starring Kurt Russell and Martin Short, the film follows a chaotic and comedic voyage, as an eccentric captain takes charge of a newly inherited Caribbean yacht.
The series will conclude with Dead Calm, starring Nicole Kidman, with the screening date to be announced in due course.
