Vivace, co-skippered by Andrew Agius Delicata and Matthew Gabriele, is best known for its double-handed racing success, yet this year marks a return to a fully crewed Rolex Middle Sea Race. “We love racing double-handed, but with such a tight-knit team we couldn’t resist sharing the adventure,” they explain.
Preparation has been both practical and collective, with safety checks, equipment set-ups, and upgrades spread across the team. This year’s line-up is a blend of long-time crewmates and fresh talent, including seasoned race boat owners and builders who add valuable offshore expertise. Drawing on lessons from their double-handed campaigns, Andrew and Matthew started preparations early, enhancing deck safety and expanding the sail wardrobe to handle stronger winds.
For the skippers, goals remain twofold: to savour the friendship and fun of sailing as one crew, and to push hard for a podium finish. “Performance and teamwork are inseparable—one fuels the other,” they affirm, confident in the trust that binds their team together. From navigating volcanic islands to battling through open waters, Vivace relishes the challenge. “Seeing our boat on the start line fills us with excitement,” they add. “This race is extraordinary, and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors, family, and friends who make it possible.”
